View of Khor Virap, an Armenian monastery and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia located in the Ararat plain with the Mount Ararat in the background. Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is due to the fact that Gregory the Illuminator, religious leader who converted Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301, becoming the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion, was initially imprisoned here for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. A chapel was initially built in 642 by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt and the current appearance dates from 1662.

Hermitage of St Christ of Miranda, Santa María de las Hoyas, Province of Soria, Castile and León, Spain. The hermitage constructed in the 18th century but its portal dates from the 12th century is the only remain of the old settlement of Miranda.

View of the Castle of Zafra, Campillo de Dueñas, Guadalajara, Spain. The castle was built in the late 12th or early 13th centuries on a sandstone outcrop and stands on the site of a former Visigothic and Moorish fortification that fell into Christian hands in 1129. It had considerable strategic importance as a virtually impregnable defensive work on the border between Christian and Muslim-ruled territory. The castle was never conquered and was successfully defended against the King of Castile in the 13th century. The successful completion of the Reconquista at the end of the 15th century ended its military significance.

The whole village of Moros lies on a hill, with the most relevant buildings in the top (church and former town hall), the residences in the middle and the sheep pens at the bottom. The current population of Moros is 441 people (35% of the population one century ago, that's why many houses are abandoned).

View of Shāh Chérāgh (Persian for "King of the Light"), a funerary monument and mosque in Shiraz, Iran. It houses the tomb of the brothers Ahmad and Muhammad, sons of Mūsā al-Kādhim and brothers of ‘Alī ar-Ridhā. The two took refuge in the city during the Abbasid persecution of Shia Muslims. The tombs became celebrated pilgrimage centres in the 14th century when Queen Tashi Khatun erected a mosque and theological school in the vicinity.

Early morning view of the Old Town of Dubrovnik and its city walls, an UNESCO Heritage Site since 1979. The former Republic of Ragusa was a maritime republic centered on the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Italian and Latin) in Dalmatia (today in southernmost modern Croatia), that existed from 1358 (end of the sovereignty of Venice) to 1808 (conquered by Napoleon's French Empire). It reached its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries, under the protection of the Ottoman Empire. It had a population of about 30,000 people, of whom 5,000 lived within the city walls.

Night view of the World Clock (Urania-Weltzeituhr), Alexanderplatz, Berlin, Germany. The 10 metres (33 ft)-high clock shows the time in 148 cities worldwide and was inaugurated in 1969. The clock has become one of the symbols of Berlin and is a popular meeting point for the people in the capital.

Family of Menhirs, Tower Park, La Coruña, Spain. The sculpture group, created in 1994, is work of artist Manolo Paz. The holes in the rocks are designed to frame different views of the park and the bay through them.

Panoramic view of the ancient Naqsh-e Rustam necropolis located about 12 km northwest of Persepolis, in Fars Province, Iran. The site includes rock reliefs of Achaemenid and Sassanid periods, 4 tombs of Achaemenid kings and a Cube of Zoroaster (far left). The reliefs are the oldest elements (the oldest one from 1000 BC) of Elamite origin. The tombs were carved out of the rock and belong (left to right) to Darius II (c. 423-404 BC), Artaxerxes I (c. 465-424 BC), Darius I (c. 522-486 BC) and Xerxes I (c. 486-465 BC). The Cube of Zoroaster belongs to the Achaemenid era (5th century BC) and its purpose is still unclear.

The museum, originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum (after Emperor Frederick III) and later honored to its curator, Wilhelm von Bode, was designed by architect Ernst von Ihne and completed in 1904. The museum hosts a collection of sculptures, Byzantine art, coins and medals.

Remains of the Romanesque Monastery of San Juan de Duero, Soria, Spain. The temple, that belonged to the Knights Hospitaller, was erected in the 12th century and inhabitated until the 18th century.

View of the Great Bath, part of the Roman Baths complex, a site of historical interest in the city of Bath, England. The baths, based on the local hot springs, were built during the Roman occupation of Britain and has become a major touristic site.

Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra, Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. The catholic parish, one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Germany, originated from the Roman tomb of St. Afra, which was martyred in 304. Its high bell tower with an "onion" dome, which dominates the city to the south, served as a prototype for the construction of numerous baroque towers of Bavaria. The church was officially elevated to the rank of imperial abbey in 1577 and in the anniversary 200 years later, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart held and organ concert there.

Bayon, Khmer temple constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century and located in the ancient city of Angkor, today Cambodia.

The Central University Library was founded in 1895, 31 years after the foundation of the University of Bucharest, as the Carol I Library of the University Foundation. The building, designed by French architect Paul Gottereau, was completed in 1893 and opened on 14 March 1895. The volume collection has grown steadily from 3,400 volumes in 1899 to over 2 million in 1970.

View of the event venue Tempodrom during the blue hour, Kreuzberg neighborhood, Berlin, Germany. It was inaugurated in 1980 next to the Berlin Wall on the west side of Potsdamer Platz and was housed in a large circus tent. After several changes of location it got a permanent building in 2002 and has today three performance spaces with a capacity of 3,800 people in the main one.

Las Lajas Sanctuary is a basilica church located in Ipiales, Colombia.

Courtyarrd ("Cour d'honneur") of Les Invalides, Paris, France. Les Invalides is a complex of buildings located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris containing the Musée de l'Armée, the military museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine. The complex also includes the former hospital chapel, now national cathedral of the French military, and the adjacent former Royal Chapel known as the "Dôme des Invalides", the tallest church building in Paris at a height of 107 metres (351 ft) (display here in the background of the image). The latter has been converted into a shrine of some of France's leading military figures, most notably the tomb of Napoleon.

Fortified city of Carcassonne during the blue hour, France. Founded during the Gallo-Roman period, the citadel derives its reputation from its 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) long double surrounding walls interspersed by 52 towers. The medieval citadel, situated on a hill on the right bank of the river Aude, was restored at the end of the 19th century by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. In 1997, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites because of its exceptional testimony to the architecture and planning of a medieval fortress town.

Cloister of the Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, one of the jewels of Romanesque in Spain. It's located near Jaca, in the province of Huesca and is partially carved in the stone of the great cliff that overhangs the foundation (San Juan de la Peña means "Saint John of the Cliff"). The old monastery was built in 920, became part of the Benedictine Order in the 11th century and was the first monastery in Spain to use the Latin Mass. The cloister, built ca. 1190, contains a series of capitals with Biblical scenes.

Legion Bridge (Czech: Most Legií, named after the Czechoslovak Legion), a historic bridge over the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic.

Temple of Athena, Paestum, Italy. The Greek temple of Magna Graecia was built around 500 BC on an artificial relief of the ground. It has a high pediment on the façade and a Doric frieze, adorned with metopes encased in sandstone, on slightly slender Doric columns. The interior of the wide pronaos contained six columns in the Ionic style (four frontal and two on each side), of which the bases and two capitals remain. These capitals burst from an ornate collar. This seems to be the first example of two architectural orders, Doric and Ionic, co-existing in a single building.
